Louis Viutton Cup
The rules aren't all that complicated, but a bit confusing. The idea is to make sure the fastest boat wins even if it has a bad series. There were two round-robins with each winner gaining a point/victory, and the top 8 boats advanced to the quarter finals. Within the top 8, the top 4 went into one tier, the bottom 4 into a second. Each pairing ran a best of 7 series, and a loser in the bottom tier is out. Within the top tier, the winners advance, but the losers get a "second chance" by racing the winners of the bottom tier. This leaves 4 boats to advance to the semi-finals.The cycle repeats. The loser in the bottom tier is history, and the loser of the top tier gets a second chance by racing the winner of the bottom tier. The winners advance to the finals, and the winner of the best of 7 are the challenger for the America's Cup.Clear as mud, right?
