It's like a round robin

...compounded by some bridge theory to arrive at a wild card playoff. It would make the BCS proud.

not really

Only the first couple rounds were round robins. It's a very simple double elimination tournament at this point. The boats in the lower bracket, One World and Prada, have already lost once, and therefore the semifinal loser of their bracket will retire from competition. The winner of that bracket will race against the loser of the upper bracket, where no boat has yet lost. That round is called a repechage, which is a lovely french way of saying "loser's bracket." The winner of the semifinal repechage will race against the winner of the current matchup between alhengy and oracle/bmw for the LV finals. The winner of that race becomes the AC challenger. Follow the link below for a graphic of how it all works.

Whole Lotta Sailin' Going On

So, if I'm reading that chart right, the winner of the America's Cup could potentially have raced 64 times.

Louis Viutton Cup

The rules aren't all that complicated, but a bit confusing. The idea is to make sure the fastest boat wins even if it has a bad series. There were two round-robins with each winner gaining a point/victory, and the top 8 boats advanced to the quarter finals. Within the top 8, the top 4 went into one tier, the bottom 4 into a second. Each pairing ran a best of 7 series, and a loser in the bottom tier is out. Within the top tier, the winners advance, but the losers get a "second chance" by racing the winners of the bottom tier. This leaves 4 boats to advance to the semi-finals. The cycle repeats. The loser in the bottom tier is history, and the loser of the top tier gets a second chance by racing the winner of the bottom tier. The winners advance to the finals, and the winner of the best of 7 are the challenger for the America's Cup. Clear as mud, right?

the winner can win the americas cup by sailing only a max of 7 races if team NZ wins.
