Pateco: Here's a couple of things to consider with regards to your sail trim. The set of the jib and the main should match -- even if the entire set is off for the point of sail and wind conditions. It just looks better to the boats around you!! You're boat is a masthead rig and the the jib is the engine on that type of boat. Your jib is too small. I think a 135 or bigger sail with a low cut would improve your performance. Also, if you're going to continue racing, you should consider a Garhauer adjustable fairlead system, which will enable your crew to dial in 100% efficiency from your jib. It looks to me, with my tired old eyes, that your jib is "twisted off". In other words, only the bottom 1/3 is driving the boat while the top 2/3 is spilling air (power).

This was during our beer can race last Wednesday evening. As you can see our trim is off. I have raced a lot when I was younger, but my current crew (2 sons and whoever needs a ride for the race), are very green. This was only our third race of the summer since we just joined the Hillsboro Inlet Sailing club this month. First race we got lapped by the fleet, and missed the windward mark twice due to bad tacks resulting in a DNF. Second race, we made all of our marks, but still got lapped by the fleet, and called it quits when the rest of the boats and race committee wanted to go in for the raft up another DNF. This week, we not only made our marks, but actually finished. YAY!! DNF to 8th place in 3 races. Still getting walked all over by other boats, but we are doing better.

Go for it, you will get better. See if you can borrow experienced crew for one of the races to give you tips regarding your boat.
PS: I think I need to upgrade my jib to something larger, does anyone have suggestions or comments. (all the other boats in the fleet are running much larger sails)
