I need to install a new WEMA level probe in a poly water tank. I have several rolls of butyl rubber that I purchased from Maine Sail. Can I use it to bed the sensor flange on the tank, or should I use something like 4200 or some form of caulk?

why not just order a new gasket from Best Fab.....i dont know how the butyl tap will hold up to the fuel on the long term.....maine sail may have some advice on this ....

For the water tank I would use silicone caulk. Don't use 4200 or 5200 and I don't think butyl rubber is appropriate for potable water.

double-ditto on the silicone. Also -- I don't think anything will adhere to the poly tank. The Silicone will really form a gasket and pressure from the mounting screws should maintain a seal.
OK, looks like I'll go with silicone. I know poly tanks are pretty slippery and not much sticks to them. When I removed the old sending unit I noticed the tank surfaces are all slighly bowed. The area where the flange for the sender mounts has a convex curve, and I'll be depending on the force of the screws through the (plastic) flange to pull the tank flat. Somehow I don't think that's a recipe for a good leak-proof installation.
