too much hp and weight

A 40hp outboard will have ill effects on any 25 foot sailboat!! Unless your boat has a planing hull (eg. the Mac 26x) the extra hp will only weigh it down and drag the boat down when sailing. Also, it will not go that much faster than the 6 hp, and will probably damage the bracket and the boat. if you try.

I/O in sailboat

I saw an ad for a sailboat - think it was an old Balboa or Catalina about 22 feet - for sale a couple of years ago. This boat had a 150 H.P. Inboard/Outboard installed in the transom. The ad said the boat was fast. But can you imagine the wake that thing would put out? So things more extreme than a 40 H.P. have been done - to what success is unknown. Regarding the 6 H.P. - if the engine is in good shape it should be able to run all day wide open.

I know a guy...

I know a guy that can do this for you. You may know him too. Tim 'the toolman' Taylor from the Home Improvement show. He made a garbage disposal run on 220vac, made a sit-on lawn mower do 60mph. Ooooh ha, power, more power. It will probably rip the transom off the vessel. Between the weight and the power, the boat should be on the bottom within a month.

9.9 max

Transoms on power boats are built to withstand the hp with one exception, the MacGregor 26X. All other sailboats are built to take only upward to 10 hp as the transoms are not built for large engines. YOu can only go so fast as this is a displacement hull. YOu need to inquire with the mfg and also the builder of the o/b bracket too as most have a rating of 10 hp only. If you exceed this advice and either the boat and/or folks get hurt, forget about going to court as there are warnings and so forth. Please do not ever consider high hp engines on sailboats for your safety sake. Crazy Dave Condon

Hull Speed

Sailboats have a set Hull Speed, rather Displacement Vessels have set Hull Speed. Also, the Motor Mount Bracket I dont think is sturdy enough to hold such weight plus the added Uncommon weight will have an adverse effect when you do Sail. The 9.9 is about all you will ever need, heck I have been running 4hp on all my Full Keel boats for a long time now. But Ifin I buy anothr OB it will be a 7-9 hp with Generator/Alternator.
