I am looking to buy a venture 17 and the swing keel is in bad shape.Cracks in fiberglass and peel off of fiberglass severe. What can be done about this,how much would it cost and can I do the repair myself.I am excited about the boat and would be grateful for any advice.This message is from a new sailor with the bad itch to get a boat.

When I got my V222, the keel was the same way, with the fiberglass peeeeelllling offf! I believe anything can be fixed, so I dropped the keel out of the boat, and then set to grinding the rust off with an abrasive wheel. Put rust resistent paint on it and refiberglassed it. It has been great now for three years. I think when the time comes though, to do it again, I will drop the keel and pull the fiberglass cloth off and just coat it in epoxy! that would be easier. anyway good luck with your boat. I like working on her as much as sailing her!
