Can exhaust hose be disconnected?

The large exhaust hose running from the engine to the water muffler needs replacing, but I'm not sure if the boat has to be out of the water for that kind of repair. If I disconnect the hose will the ocean come rushing into the boat? Scott 1983 H31 Yanmar 2GM 13hp

Scott, I have had to replace that hose in my

in my 1990 V-32. I had no problem. My exhaust port sat right on the water line on the outside. But Hunter had the connection in the Hull fiberglassed up above the water line. One more interesting experience to share. I purchased a new knot meter, Raytheon makes it so you can pull the speed traducer and replace it with a plug for long sitting periods. I will never forget how scared I was the first time I pulled it. I thought like you, the water was going to come pouring in. But it was so surprising what little amount of water actually comes in as I switch them out. Your hole is probally bigger than my plug hole. I also had to replace my rudder, and I was scared that the water would come pouring in and sink her, but once again, Hunter has the exit hole below the water line and the hole on the inside, which is actually where the emergency tiler goes in, on my deck, above the water line. I could sit there and stare at the water from my deck. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!! Daddy's Dream

REPLACED MINE

Scott: The short answer is you shouldn't have a problem since the terminus of the exhaust hose from the mixing elbow to the water lift muffler is above the waterline. Just to be sure you won't have a problem I'd recommend you carefully remove the hose at the muffler end and make sure no water gets in. I'd also put a plug in the muffler barb while changing out the hose just to be sure (and allow you to sleep at night!). I might suggest a somewhat larger job for next time you haul. A number of years ago I got tired of hanging over the stern counter to see if water was coming from the exhaust ('85 H31). When I hauled, I moved the exhaust exit from under the stern counter (what the heck was Hunter thinking of anyway!??@#$#) to about 18" above the waterline on the starboard side near the stern. I then had the old exhaust hole glassed over. The only thing I'd change would be to have used a bit of SS "pipe" at the new exhaust port to keep the water off the hull (I have to clean off a bit of black exhaust from the hull every few weeks). One of these days I'm going to invest in a digital camera and post photos of the job here. Good luck on your job! It really isn't too bad and you "probably" won't sink your boat!!! Just kidding! Water will come in only if you

forget to close the seacock on the thru-hull before removing the hose.

Exhaust

I have replaced the hose on my 28.5 and I believe that your 31 is like the 28.5 in that the exhaust is above the waterline. Therefore, water can not enter the boat while the boat is standing still. I actually replaced the entire hose which meant taking the hose off of the exhaust stack pipe at the back of the boat. By the way, replace the entire hose since they tend to rot where they exit the boat. BY the way I do not believe that there is a seacock at the exhaust, only the water intake to the engine.

No seacock on exhaust hose!

Peggy: FYI - these vessel do not have a seacock on the exhaust hose (right or wrong, that is a fact).

Ohhhh...duh! Of course they don't...

For some reason my mind made a left turn and decided we were talking about the water intake hose. That one BETTER have a seacock! :)

DON'T DO THIS TO US PEGGY!!

Peggy: Life has been too hard recently without having you experience brain f--ts! You (OK, I'll include Steve Dion as well) are the rocks of sage information on this site! If you crash and burn, the rest of us will follow! Tim Leighton (shaken on the Ches Bay)

Large Loop in Hose

I have a H 31 1984 and there is a large loop in the exhaust hose from the muffler to the outside of the boat which prevents water from siphoning back into the boat. There is also a large loop in the hose from the engine to the muffler. I assume the 83 is the same. I have just replaced my built in muffler [it was leaking] with a Vetus Waterlock. I had both hoses detached at the muffler and there was no water coming in from either end.
