Fort Lauderdale or the area? I would like to increase my knowledge beyond what I have learned by feeling it out and reading books, so I feel I need to start getting ASA certs and such. Anyone recommend a club and school in this area?

Blue Water Sailing School

I had a great learning experience at BWSS in Ft Lauderdale last winter. Made the crossing to Bimini and back. I hated for the week to end. They came highly recommended to me and I pass on the recommendation. Rana

My wife and heartily recommend Captain Bill at BWSS (Blue Water Sailing School) we took the first 3 ASA courses and spent about 5 days aboard Third Wish a 43 foot Gib'sea. The experience was great. We learned tons and tons about sailing, but most important we gained the confidence to sail our own boat. We plan to make an offshore passage with these folks in the future.

Don954: I don't know if J world is located anywhere near you but they have an excellent program. In my case, I would have to travel to San Diego (over 100 miles), which I would do in a heart beat. My problem is I have to sign up as a sub because I can't get anyone to go with me - they like to take a crew - and they never seem to have openings where they can accomadate me. I've tried twice and then gave up. Their program would instill more boat handling skills than you could ever imagine. I've watched their program from the dock and talked extensively to their students. When you finished their course, you could handle any boat in 95% of the situations you will ever encounter on the water. You would not have to worry about motoring out of a situation - you could sail out of any of them. Steve Colgate might be another program but I don't have enough info to endorse them. They do have a slick video. Good luck in your search for a sailing school. Good ones are few and far between. Be sure to interview any school you are considering before you plop down your $$$. Make sure they are going to cover the material you want. Most of these outfits just want to wet your interest in sailing and pass you through and get you into charter. Years ago, a couple of schools I interviewed in So Ca told me that with only a couple of hours of instruction I would be able to take a 34' to Catalina. Fortunately, I realized I was talking to idiots and I moved on to the next school.

Give Chapman's a ring up in Port Salerno (60 miles or so north of you). They have a sailing program and if you have your own sailboat you can have an instructor onboard for hands on learning. Great folks. Bob

Don't know if there's one in Ft lauderdale

But if you get a chance to take a course with the Colgate School somewhere I have heard good things from someone that took their sailing class. http://www.offshore-sailing.com/
