This is a picture of the centerboard on a Brewer 12.8. The u-bolt on the left is where the cable attaches to raise/lower. Can anyone tell me what the heck the screw to the right could be for. It will take some major cutting to get to it and get a look from the top. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/stoutwench/detail?.dir=2b68&.dnm=bf9d.jpg&.src=ph Thanks Ian

Question about the screw...

It looks like some round washers under the screw. Is that a fact? I think it may be a veiw/access port in the centerboard housing. I don't know the boat so I am guessing. r.w.landau

Keel

This is just a guess, mind you, but if the blue object in the picture is actually the keel, then maybe it's just a place to attach a grounding wire. By the way, your pictures indicate you've got quite a restoration going. Looks great!

Yes

Yes, there is a round washer under the screw and yes, it is the swing keel. I had not thought about it being a grounding point. Everything on the boat is grounded and bonded, but nothing was attached to the screw, nor is there any sign of a wire. " your pictures indicate you've got quite a restoration going" I'm 6 months into a 18 month total refit. Trying to get my to-do-list/schedule to post with the pictures, but not having much success. Thanks for the help

Another thought...

Ian, If that is the swing keel itself, I doubt if grounding would attach to it but I do think this may be a place for a zinc anode. The anode is probably long since been gone. r.w.landau

Ian, Where are you? What's your boats history?

My calculator says she's 41'6". What an exciting job. Tell us more. Guys like me love this stuff! I saw those chain plates. Whew.

Anode?

I am able to get a few fingers around the screw and it won't move ... corrosion I'm certain. The u-bolt does show signs of some pitting. I will try to scrape away the dirt and caulk around their base and determine if they are in any way connected. "Where are you? What's your boats history?" The boat is at my shop in Monroe, NC. She is a 1982 Brewer built by Ft Myers Yachts. We brought her up from Florida. The two previuos owners split their time between New England and the Caribbean. As best as I can determine, she is one of the first Brewer hulls(if not the first). The Brewer 12.8 is a redesigned Whitby 42. Ted Brewer changed several hull features and incorporated the bow sprit but the interior stayed relatively the same.
