I learned to sail in this boat over 20 years ago. It was recently given to me, but I don't know what it is. I would like to find out more about it so that I can restore it if possible. The length is about 16.5 feet. It has a furling jib, and rear mounted traveller. The sail number is US1, indicating it might be a prototype or custom, but it looks to be high quality (although in need of restoration). I remember it planed well in light winds and was pretty fast. There is a plaque on the transom with the words 'Alger West Boats, San Pedro CA'. The cuddy cover has a logo similar to a 'Y' on it's left side. Any information would be appreciated! Let me know if you want to see more photos. Thanks in advance -- Antoni

Serial numbers?

Are there any serial numbers on the hull. My boat has them on the transom. Check that, it usually indicates the make by abbreviation.

I haven't been able to find any serials...

Is there anywhere else they may typically be?

Some answers...more questions!

I looked up the MIC code for AGR on the USCG site, and it revealed that it is an Avenger (manufactured by Avenger Custom Manufacturing in Harvey, LA). I called Avenger in New Orleans, but they claim they have never made a sailboat, only powerboats. I'm guessing from the serial number that it was a custom or prototype made in December 1974: AGR-C001-1274 (with C001 meaning custom, serial number 1). Does anyone have any thoughts or answers to this mystery? Thanks, Antoni

They may have licensed..

their name out for a sailboat to some other company. That's what Wellcraft did in the early 80's. Perhaps there's no one at the company that remembers the details. Just a thought, but it took me several calls years ago when I was on a similar hunt.
