I am interested in getting a 1977 30' 'tall rig' hunter. The specs. given on this site are way off from the 30' that is for sale (according to the owners). Did Hunter make a 'tall rig' in 77' and if so, how much different from the others of that same year? According to the owners, the sail area is almost twice that of what Hunter reps. are saying (800 sq. ft.), the beam is almost a foot longer, the ballast is almost 1,000 lbs. heavier, draft is off and so on. According to the owners it also weighs in at 7.5 tons and of course the capsize screen # is way off as well. Now either the owners got the wrong length or year, or the specs. that this site is giving vary greatly. Do you know? Any info. would be great!! Thanks. Chris

Blowing smoke up your....

Chris: I think that the owner is blowing smoke up your butt. The specs that you are quoting look like a 35-40'. Look at the boat of the same vintage 30, 33, 37 and compare that with your numbers. I don't think they are even close. Ask you seller what he has been smokin'

correct tall rig numbers...

are here: http://people.ne.mediaone.net/tlyons/tdl/hunter/pg46.JPG I own a 1981 tall rig version of the boat. Both the numbers given on HOW and your numbers are way off.(I have measured my boat when having sails made.) My info says the tall rig was only made 1981-83. Comments: -The displacement on the federal documentation is about 7.5 tons. The boat does *not* displace this much, the 7.5 tons is just a number in a formula. -Sail area is measured for a 100% jib. If the owner has a 165% genoa this does *not* change the rated sail area. -The ballast is about 1000 lbs higher than the web site says but so is the standard rig.

They're all tall rigs

Catalina makes a standard and a tall rig, but Hunter comes with a tall rig high aspect rig, this means a sho0rter boom.

Check the serial #s

Take a look on the stern or where Hunter Corporate says the serial # should be, compare it to the documentation, and call hunter to verify the specs. Now 2 things can happen. I hear that sometimes a rig comes in from the spar maker and its off and rather than send it back and hold up the delivery of a boat, hunter ships it. The other is that sometimes in storm situations ie dismasting or a hurricane rips into town and damage is done, frequently its cheaper/faster to accept a spar off the shelf of similar specs than wait for an exact spar to be made. None of the above solves your beam problem. But I have heard that Hunter, Catalina, Benetau, are not One Design boats and as such are not made to the rigid specs (weight etc) that a Mumm 30 or J-105 is. Consequently your hunter could be sever hundred pounds off due to extra glassing etc. You might want to have your surveyor check the hull for water absorbsion as this can add several hundred pounds to the vessel also. Net Tones

My '77 H30 is rated at 7 tones, as part of the documentation. As stated previously, this is a Coast Guard formula. Pete Albright s/v Nancy Ross
