Maple = Newspaper??

Jibes,

Good plan except that maple wood is only slightly more durable than newspaper.
Hey Ross. can you explain your comment? On my sailing dinghy I found a board that is laminated at home depot. Looks like a cutting board for the kitchen or maybe intended for counter tops. I belive it is maple but that was ten years ago. The centerboard on a boat like this is usually only in the water while sailing then it is removed. I've used mine for ten years and it is just as strong and healthy as new. Why do you feel maple won't last? Especially coated with epoxy? I realize maple is not the wood of choice by the wooden boat building industry but I've never seen an explanation for why not.

:Dthe wood fibers in maple dont hold up to verticle grain stress very well they like to split and crack like hickory but do very well for furniture due to grain pattern and ease of cutting with a plane or shaper

Jibes, Maple is strong, hard , heavy, and not durable. Neglect it for just one season and it will likely fail. Simple answer for yours is that you have not left is wet for extended periods. I have cut meat on fifty year old maple butcher blocks but I have also seen old butcher blocks dumped on the ground outside that could be kicked to pieces after two years.
