Can a charger go dead?

Got a 20 amp Guest charger running on my new (used) 84 C 30. It hums, the light is on but the volt meter says all the batterys are at 11.9 to 12.2 and need a charge. Three days of charging makes no difference. Started up the diesel with 15 amp alternator and after 15 minutes all the batterys read fully charged at 12.6 volts. To me it seems like the alternator works but the charger does not. By the way, the batterys do not feel warm. Any ideas?

Dead? Dead!

Yes, it can. Sounds like the charger isn't working, or perhaps the connection from the charger to the battery is bad. With the charger off check the voltage at the output terminals of the charger. A nominal reading of 12 volts would indicate a good connection from the battery to the charger.

Battery Charger Operation

Bob In addition to John's suggestion, disconnect the battery cables with the charger off. Measure as he suggested. Then turn the charger ON, and measure the output voltage of the charger with the battery wires still disconnected. See what the output voltage of the charger is. Then, check the connections at the battery. That's about all you can do. If there's no output from the charger, then you have the choice: repair or replace. If you're lucky enoughh to have to replace it, get a Xantrex Statpower. They'll be very kind to your batteries, much better than the Guest or any other brand.
