The H28.5 rig calls for some degree of mast pre-bend, which requires a backstay. I also do not think the shrouds come far enough aft of the mast to support a loaded headsail without a backstay.
Actually I think I remember that the pre-bend is put into the rig on the bench for the early B&R Rigs. When the mast is stepped the only thing left to do is to get the rig positioned properly fore/aft and port/starboard with the properl rig tension.
The early Hunters with B&R rigs also had backstays and our newer Hunters are setup different with extra cross support to allow for no backstay, you need to sail with your backstay.

Why do you ask? Is there some issue... like the topping lift tangling up on the back stay? Thats been the annoyance for me- finally solved with a boomkicker.
