I recently purchased my Hunter 30 and ordered a Campbell Sailer 3 blade propeller 14x8 to replace the 2 blade 15x12 that was on the boat. During the seatrial with the dealer we found that the new propeller loaded the Yanmar 2GM20F down to a maximum of 2500 rpm and 6 kts of boat speed. It also showed evidence of being overloaded with black exhaust smoke and soot in the water. The engine also overheated after 5 minutes. We pulled the 3 blade prop and put the 2 blade back on and found the engine ran at 3200 rpm w/o and 6.5 knots of speed. There was no black smoke or soot. I searched in the archives and found that others have changed the propellers with good experience. I am working with West by North, that sold me the propeller trying to find the solution. The 3 blade does have less vibration which is what I was looking for. Has anyone else had experience changing their prop from a 2 blade to 3 blade? Has anyone tried the Campbell Sailer prop?

are you sure about the size of your old prop?

John: Are you sure about the size/pitch of your old prop? I assume that you have a 2GM20F engine. We originally had the same prop 15 x 12 - 2 blade that came with the boat. It was over propped from the factory. We always thought that the engine should have had a 15 x 10 - 2. The Campbell props have different characteristics than the traditional sailor props, but I would have thought that reducing the diameter by 1" and the pitch by 4 degrees would have more than compensated for the extra blade. I am wondering if they screwed up on their end with their specs. These guys at West by North are reported to be good guys, so I am sure that they will take care of you.

The old prop is stamped 15x12

Steve, The prop that seemed to be installed on most of the 30 Hunters I have checked out had that prop on them. Russ at West by North said the 14x8 prop is the one they have sold to the Hunter owners with the standard transmission. (2.61 ratio). When we tried the boat out yesterday and found the prop was too much for the engine to turn, Russ suggested we check to make sure I didn't have the 2.21 ratio transmission which they apparently put in a few boats. However the mechanic did a physical check of engine rotations to the output shaft of the transmission and verified the 2.61 ratio of the transmission. The Yanmar help site says that those are the right props for that engine transmission combination. I am shipping the prop back to Russ so they can confirm it was properly manufactured. I will post any results I come up with to this situation. It is very frustrating as I won't probably pull the boat again this season just to change the prop again. Two times was enough.

PROP CHANGE

IN DAYS GONE BY WHEN MEN WERE MEN AND .,,, BLAH BLAH... ANYWAY ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO WHEN I BLEW UP THE ENGINE IN MY 37 CUTTER AND REPLACED IT WITH A NEW WESTERBEKE 31HP BEAUTY I CONTACTED WEST BY NORTH (CAMPBELL SAILOR) AND NORM GACE ME SOME RECOMMENDATIONS. I PURCHACED A 3 BLADE PROP FROM THEM ON HIS RECOMMENDATION AND INSTALLED IT. NOT KNOWING WHAT THE BOAT SHOULD BE DOING I CRANKED IT UP AND HAD GOOD RESULTS. ENGINE RAN A BIT BELOW MAX RPM BUT NOT BY ENOUGH TO BE OF A CONCERN. TALKED TO NORM AGAIN BEFORE I HAULED THE BOAT AND GAVE HIM THE INFO AND HE RECOMMENDED THAT I DECREASE PITCH. I DID AND THE RPM'S CAME UP AND THE SPEED WAS WHERE IT SHOULD BE... I'M VERY HAPPY WITH THE PROP... ABOUT A MONTH AGO I HAD THE PROP CHANGED TO A 2 BLADE MARTEC ELIPTICAL SO I COULD BE COMPETITIVE RACING THE BOAT AND HAVE NOT BEEN HAPPY WITH THE MOTORING.. VIBRATION AND NOT ENOUGH SPEED AT THE SAME RPM AS THE 3 BLADE...... BOTTOM LINE.... MARTEC = SPEED UNDER SAIL AND GIVE UP SOMETHING UNDER POWER...3 BLADE CAMPBELL SAILOR = GREAT MOTORING BUT BIG MORE DRAG UNDER SAIL I WILL RACE WITH THE MARTEC BUT CRUSE WITH THE CAMPBELL SAILOR LOVE IT.. OH ONE LAST THING I MAY EVENTUALLY CHANGE TO A KIWI 3 BLADE FEATHERING PROP SO THAT I CAN HAVE THE BEST OF BOTH THAT IS MY PLAN fwiw CHET P HARRIET'S CHARIOT H37C #36

Finding a diver

Chet, That might be the best suggestion - to get the diver. I used to do some of that in a previous life - however our 45 degree water doesn't get me too excited about jumping in right now at age 65. I am sure when Russ gets the prop back he can figure out what the problem with it is. It just doesn't make sense that the same prop that has been used on many other Hunter 30's with the Yanmar 2GM20 like I have are happy with the performance. We are moving the boat from Waukegan, IL (just north of Chicago) up Lake Michigan into Lake Huron to our home port starting this weekend. I would have liked to had the 3 blade prop on for the trip, but will have to wait till later this season or next year.
