I recently purchased a Campbell Sailer prop for my boat. I asked my marina to remove/install the new prop. They removed the old prop and then checked proper fitting for the new prop using a dye. In short, the new prop connects with the shaft at only the last 1/2" of the hub, and the remainder is off 1/12000 of an inch. Further, they sent the new prop to a shop in the Detroit area where it was further inspected and confirmed that it was off as stated above.
As I was told, this could result in possible wobble, vibration, or even cracking the shaft which could result in a lost prop and then needing both a new shaft and new prop.
1/12000 of in an inch doesn't sound like much, but is it going to cause problems?
To top it off, my marina, after speaking with the manufacturer in VanCouver advised me that they would send another prop and I would return the previous one to them upon receipt. That was a week ago. I followed up with 2 emails, yesterday and today asking for a tracking number and was told he is waiting for his original prop and also needs the prop from my boat to properly check measurements. He said he is using standard SAE 1" shaft for fitting.
I understand that the last suggestion would be the proper thing to do. But the boat is 2 hrs from me and still not in the water. I live in Michigan.
I know some of you will tell me that if I want the new prop properly fitted, to send the original prop for measurement. And some will tell me if I don't want to lose anymore sailing time this season to just forget it, put the old prop back on and move on with life.
What would you do? I especially look forward to hearing from anyone who has purchase the 3 blade Campbell Sailer for the H30 1980. I can't imagine there being any difference in the original shaft size. While I'm not the original owner, I do believe the shaft came with the boat when new.

When the prop hub slides onto the shaft, how much of the hub should actually "lock on" to the shaft?

Perhaps you could get the yard to verify your prop shaft taper. Maybe the shaft been modified or filed down by PO for whatever reason. I ordered my 3blade Campbell Sailer from Norm and it fits well. Mine is 1" SAE standard taper.

would lapping your prop/shaft might solve the fit problem?- see MaineSail's site for a description.

Mike, I also bought a CS from Norm for my H34. It fits perfectly, works perfectly and appears to be pitched perfectly. Norm has a great reputation so I recommend you do whatever he requests.

Mike,

This is VERY, VERY, VERY common. Any new prop fit to an existing shaft should be checked with Prussian Blue and if the contact area is minimal, as in below 80% even contact, the the prop should be lap fit. Just installed a Flex-O-Fold onto a shaft made by a shop that does military shafting and the shaft taper was known to be spot on and checked with special expensive taper dies. The new prop made about 15% contact. After lap fitting we were darn close to 95%.

If your yard checked it with Prussian Blue then they should also know how to lap fit it..
