Campanionway Steps?

Is there or was there a companionway step arrangement for the swing - keel model of the C22? It would need to be clear of the keel cable winch handle as it turns. Not to have any steps at all is requires stepping on the lazarette or dinette seats to get up and down, which doesn't seem to be well planned. Any ideas for solving this problem would be appreciated.

Steps

Hi, I don't know what year you have and if that makes any difference, but I have a 1975 and aft of the electrical panel there is a compartment covered with little board/hatch that you can access the bilge through. This is directly below the companionway and in front on the winch handle. That serves as the one step before you are actually on the "floor" of the cabin. The winch handle can get in the way, but usually I lower the keel all the way down and then turn the handle to the port side and out of the way. See the middle picture on the link below... thats the step I'm talking about on a mid to late 70's model -Mike

Thanks for the Diagram!

Thanks for sending the pictures and the diagram. Is this a special cooler? Is it supplied by catalina direct?

Step

For the later models, a cooler with a teak step on the lid is used for the step down into the cabin. It's actually a pretty clever solution. I don't have a pic handy at the moment, but can post one later if you like.

Cooler Step

I believe it's actually a Coleman cooler. I don't remember the size (in volume) off the top of my head. My boat is in storage right now, so I can't easily take a look at it. I looked through my Catalina Direct Owner's Handbook and could not find any reference to the cooler/step. I'm sure you could just measure the space and go buy one to fit. Just make sure you measure the height with the keel crank handle in the downmost position so you have clearance for raising and lowering the keel without having to move the cooler out of the way. My cooler has a piece of teak attached to the top of it as a "step tread". It looks nice that way, but you don't have to have it. Although I'd make sure you do something to make sure it's not a slippery surface when it's wet. If you can get one the exact size of the opening, it'll fit in there nice and snug and won't move around. You'll see what I mean about fit when you take a closer look at your boat for the measurements. Hope that helps!

Cooler Step: Update

Ok. I took another look and found a part listed as "Ice Box Step, Teak". The part number is D1141. Looks like this is referring to just the teak step tread rather than the entire cooler, but I could be wrong. The price is listed as $33.00. You may want to give CD a call to find out just what this part actually is. In any case, if they don't carry the actual cooler itself, I'm sure they tell you what model Coleman cooler you need.

Cooler Pic

Here's a pic I found online of the companionway with the cooler in place. It's not a swing keel boat, but the cooler is exactly the same. Notice the teak step tread on the lid.

Cooler Model

I took a quick look at the Coleman web site and I think this model is the one that fits our boats. It looks like the one in the last pic I posted too. Notice the handles on the cooler. http://www.coleman.com/coleman/images/products/5248A718_500.jpg This is exactly like the one I have in my boat. Although you will need to measure to be sure. Below is the cooler info from the Coleman website. Model No: 5248A718 Dimensions: 14.88" X 25.5" X 13.5"

Re: Thanks Again Dave!

No problem. Sorry about all the posts. I kept thinking of different ways to find info for you.

teak step just went way up in price!

I just called CD. The handbook had the teak step listed for $33.00. (Sounded cheap enough for me to spend the $$ on what is to me, a non-essential item) The gentleman at CD told me the price had gone up to $78.00!!! I told him that I'd "pass". It's a nice feature but not THAT nice. I guess I'll go get the coleman cooler you suggested (thanks)then maybe try to make my own step from a piece of teak. I ordered the keel zincs that I've been reading about in this forum though! ("WRENCH or WALLET?"......WRENCH!)

How is the step Attached?

Dave: This may sound like a dumb question... Is the step attached to the cooler or to the boat? In the photo you sent it looks as though the step might be attached to the boat on some sort of hinge. Is this the case? Or is it simply attached to the lid of the cooler?

It's the lid

I use an older green metal Coleman cooler and put non-skid strips on the top. Randy

Re: How is the step Attached?

It's attached to the lid of the cooler. Mine actually has a screw in each corner. I've never taken it off, so I don't know if there is also some adhesive used. I'd say the teak is about 1/4" to 3/8" thick. Mind you, that's based on memory, which may not be very good these days.)
