I am plannig to mount harken swivel cam cleats in place of the deck cleats just inboard of the jib winches. Has anyone done this? I spoke with 2 M&E Marine folks one said it was a good thing to do, the other recommended clam cleats. Any comments would be welcomed. Thanks Gary

Self tailing gizzmo for the winchs

Gary, Have you considered the Wincher? It's a self tailing attachment for non-self tailing winches. They're about 29.95 per pair and might meet your needs without modification to the boat. Greg H23 Faster-

You might also look in the photo forum. Someone has done this on a H240, which is laid out somewhat similar.

The Wincher

I actually bought a pair of the Winchers but decided to return them. Although they seemed to be a good, low-cost alternative, on my boat the Wincher would have cut the drum size almost in half. (I have the Barlow 15 winches.) When installed, I would only have been able to get about 2 wraps on the drum of the winch before running into the Wincher.

I have regular cam cleats

They were installed by the previous owner and are mounted near the top of the cockpit coaming, inboard of the winches. They work pretty well, as long as you run the sheet over the winch first. In light wind I don't wrap the sheet on the winch. If you run the sheet from the jib sheave straight to the cleat it's a little harder to pull. Peter S/V Raven

Cam Cleats Hunter 23

I have these on my boat and they are great. Never had any problems with the cam cleats. I have been out in 20-25 kts with a 135% jib and there is lots of pull being placed on the cleat, but never had one slip. They sure make tacking quick and easy. My only problem is that my tracks are mounted too close to the winch and jam almost every time. Can only put one wrap without them jamming. Where-O-Where should they be?? Looking at installing two new tracks forward and outboard of my factory (?) tracks. Looking for any good ideas!! Scott "No Alibi"

tracks, winches and cleats

I stayed with the original jam cleats, which makes it easier to bow string the sheet when triming in the 150 by running the sheet across the cockpit. I guess I'm too lazy to look for the winch handle. As for problems with sheet angle between you fairlead on the track and the winch, I had a few too many overrides after I installed track for my 150. I cut a 1' thick wooden plug to sit under the winches, to change the angle the sheet comes into the winch. I have not had an override in all the years since I did that. Too much talking, I finally have a weekend day without soccer, I'm going sailing. Jim Kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo

Rope Clutches

Splurge! Install a good set of rope clutches, they'll make your life so much easier, and you won't have to worry about the main halyard slipping out of the cheep clam shell cleats Hunter provided.
