My H23.5 came with cabin roof winches and cleats to secure the jib sheets. Has anyone put on cam cleats to secure the jib sheets directly, or cam cleats to secure the sheets after it comes off the winch?? It jib doesn't seem large enough to use a winch with?? Also has anyone used the winches with an asymetrical chute running the sheets through a turning block near the stern?? thanks, Jack

Jack, I can only speak to my experience regarding

your first questions. I had a Hunter 22 that had winches on the coaming and a swivel cam cleat nearby. The vast majority of the days we sailed (inland lake) I just used the swivel cleats - sometimes it was a little "stiff" but overall, very convenient. On rare occasion did I feel the need to throw a turn or so around the small winch before leading it through the swivel cam cleat. Compare the jib sizes and if the 22 has as large or a little larger jib than you and you are in decent condition (I was early 50's and in good condition), then IMHO, a swivel cam would work pretty nice for your boat. Thanks guys..

I'm still feeling my way around the boat. I've sailed and raced most everything under 17' for the last 45 years, but this is my first exposure to winches and I'm struggling to adapt light wind cam cleat usage with higher wind winch usage.

Thanks Rick

Thats kind of what I was thinking.. Installing a good set of swivel cam cleats next to the winch to either secure after the winch, or secure the jib sheet directly. How do you handle the jib sheets?

I Use the Spinlocks Only

If you sheets are long enough you can control the jib while at the tiller with them.

Spinlocks

I've never used the winches on my H260 - not once. I'm a big fan of spinlocks for small boats -- Check this link for more info on the spinlocks http://kobernus.com/hunter260/spinlock/spinlock.html

Spinlocks vs Harkin Cam Cleats

The author believes the spinlocks are the way to go.. has anyone used both the spinlocks and cam cleats that can give a Pro/Con review of the two. I have used the Cam Cleats on all my boats and find them to work great, and the swivel ones can be used at many angles such as off the winch or directly from the jib. Opinions of the two?? Thanks, Jack
