I’m watching news re the rain in Virginia. SML must be getting deluged too. How’s it going there? When I was there we went to the dam. I guess they can let more water through it. BTW I just traced the Roanoke River to end at sea level- guess where?

Yeah, he comes within 45 minutes of me (20 minutes of my boat) and texts me when he’s 2.5 hours away.

Heres a link to SML water level by the hour. Doesnt look bad approaching at what they call "Normal Pond" but its on the rise.

SML is hydroelectric and the power company really manages the level and all aspects of that lake. Water out of SML immediately dumps int Leesville Lake, another smaller hydroelectric, and on its way to Albemarle. Many assume this area is part of the Chesapeake watershed, but not so.

I wonder why the river exiting Leesville Dam is called Roanoke River, but the name changes to Staunton River between Leesville and Kerr Reservoir, but then the name of the river changes back to Roanoke River just before Kerr Res and is named that way the rest of the way down to Albemarle Sound? That's how it is named on Google Maps.

It has to do with the ancient rivalries between Virginia and North Carolina. Roanoke is a storied word in NC, which at some point the folks in Big Lick, Virginia swiped as their own. Staunton is a storied word in Virginia. Still squabbling about the name of the Kerr Reservoir which is called Buggs Island lake in Virginia.

Being a native Ohioan (sorry bout that) and living in Va and Md my adult life have learned of the Storied squabbles between Va, Md, Pa and especially over water rights/ownership. For some reason some English King gave the colony of Md the entire Potomac River to Md right up to where the water licks the Va and now Wv shore. That still applies. No state line down the middle of the river. In years past neither Md or Va allowed gambling establishments however Md would allow gambling boats to come across the Potomac and put a gang plank down and envite Virginians aboard. Lots of squabbling about that. Even today there is an establishment at Colonial Beach Va where a board walk goes out into the river about 50 ft to a pretty large gambling facility. Right about half way down the board walk a big sign saying Entering State of Md.
As far as all this rain is concerned appears that the Susquehanna river was running about 10X the normal late July flow into the Chesapeake. With it a massive amount of debris out of Pa. This junk has gotten as far S as Annapolis and clogged the city docks. You couldnt get a dingy through it for a couple days. Again Md bitching at Pa for dumping all this stuff into the Susquehanna, rain or no rain.
