I am planning a trip to block Island in july and plan to sail from greenport and pickup my stepsons in CT. and head for Block Island. I would like to arrive in CT. on a wed or thur and leave for block early fri morning,I am thinking essex or mystic would be a good pickup spot. They will need to leave their car while we are gone, any good suggestons for doing this.

Nick You are better off with the Mystic area over Essex. The sail from Greenport to Mystic is only a few hours but you need to time your passage through the race to a flood current. Once you get around to the North Side of Fishers Island it's less than an hour to Mystic. If you were going to Essex you would be sailing West away from Block Island. There are several marinas in the Mystic/Noank area. Spicers for example is in Noank and you do not have to go up the Mystic River. I am sure that you can make arrangements to leave a car. From Noank to Block Island is about 4 hours maybe a little less. It's an easy trip. Just head out East through Fishers Island Sound, past Watch Hill. Again it's an easy trip weather permitting.

I agree with Marc

Essex is out of your way and a longer sail than you would think. Also, the wind is typically lighter as you move west up the Sound. There are very few marinas between the Connecticut River and the Thames River. The only ones I know of, and this is where I sail every week, are inside the bridges in the Niantic River. There are numerous marinas on the western side (New London) side of the Thames River. This is a perfect place to head to Block from. The only downside is that there can be a lot a rolling from sea swells and ferry traffic. So Groton, Noank, and Mystic are probably the best choices. Anywhere outside of the train bridges is good. Spicer's in Noank seems to be pretty well run. Also, as Marc stated, you really should try to work the tide from Greenport and through the Gut and then again out through the Race if you choose to go that way.

another possibility

Nick, Pick your stepson up in New London and this way if you do not want to go all the way back to New London after Block, he can take the ferry right back to his car. (Unless your stepson is too young to drive a car, in which case forget what I just said....:)

Just up the Mystic River (not far from Spicer's)..

...on the west side is Sailing Specialties, a Hunter dealer. Spend the night and walk around Mystic. Leave the car there. Across the river is Brewer's Mystic. Nice parking and the town is at your fingertips. It may be tougher to get a slip at Brewer's, though.

Greenport to Block Island

Nick, I've done the trip from Mt.Sinai to Block Island via Ct. a number of times, the best place is the Noank Shipyard, right at the mouth of the Mystic River, nice facilities and you can eat lobster in the rough right next door . Next morning, check the tide at the race and you'll be in BI in approx. 4 hours.

I agree with Rich.

I've been at Noank Shipyard for 4 years now. It couldn't be easier for you from there. No problem parking for the stepsons on a Wed or Thurs. Nice transient slips and moorings. Abbot's Lobster in the Rough next door or Costello's on the dock at NSY. Packie is a 10 min walk up the hill. Breakfast at or from Carsons is great (15 min walk). Sounds like a good time. Have fun.

I am also in Mt. Sinai. How long does it take you to get to the Noank Shipyard? Just bought a new boat (1986 P36-2) and will be making the trip to Block next year a couple of times if I am lucky. Thanks! Greg Mt. Sinai (Old Mans Boatyard)

I usually figure on 7 to 8 hours for the trip from Mt. Sinai to Noank. The nice part about stopping at Noank, is that your second day to BI will only be about 4 hours which can put you into the Great Salt Pond early enough to pick up a town mooring. Good luck with your new boat, perhaps we'll cross paths this summer. I keep my 30' Seidelmann on a mooring in the harbor, the name of the boat is the "Anna Rita".

Thanks! Will keep my eyes out for you. I keep my boat at a slip in Old Man's on the east dock and keep her at Columbia Street in winter; boat is named Four the Soul. Are you a member of the Mt. Sinai Sailing Association? Have a good off-season!

Noank to Mt. Sinai

Hi Greg, Yesterday I made the trip from Spicers in Noank to Mt. Sinai. We left at 7:20am and were tied to the dock at Old Man's by 3:20pm. It's 53 nm if you make a straight run (easy to do). We had a foul tide for a few hours early, then a fair tide for the rest of the trip. The wind was behind us the entire time so we motored at 2000 rpm with just a jib up and moved at 7 kts no problem. See you around, Barry Barry Lenoble Curragh, O'Day 35 Mt. Sinai, NY

Barry...

Thanks and congrats! Went by and saw your boat.....very nice. Is that an Isomat boom and mast that you have? If so, is your in boom main reef lines set up? If so, I would love to see how the lines are run. Will see you down in the yard some time. Greg
