California Trippin’ – Cruising Monterey to Carmel

We were in Monterey for the last three days and the weather was excellent for sailing. I was thinking of dragging the C22 down there and staying at the transient slip for $20/day. Then day sailing around the area, including down to Carmel or even on to Big Sur or up to Moss Landing.

Anyone familiar with the area have recommendations on sailing that area?

Was stationed in the Navy in that area and spent a lot of time sailing there. Be very careful entering Moss Landing as it can be very trick due to waves. The kelp off shore can cause some problems, but if you stay clear you'll be fine. Be prepared for the fog to come in suddenly. But it is some of the prettiest shoreline anywhere, lots of otters, sea lions and whales.

I took my Jet Ski out of Moss Landing a few years back. There was a moderate westerly swell. When they hit the breakwaters, the entrance between them became completely confused. I was 100 yards from the entrance, headed out when a 15 foot wave literally jumped up in front of me. I just had time to duck my head as the Jet Ski went through the wave. Now that was exciting.

I would recommend going to Santa Cruz from Monterey, rather than down the coast. Reason? The coast can sometimes get inhospitable quite quickly, and if you slog UPHILL to SC it's downwind back to Monterey. Moss Landing after noon (1200 hours) is not too advisable in a fair breeze.

If you sail over to Santa Cruz as Stu suggests, you can anchor the boat on either side of the wharf. It is a free anchorage and is nicely protected. The west side of the wharf is quieter than the east side. Steer for the big hotel and anchor just outside of the swimmers bouys. You will be in 10-12 feet of water.
