Calibrate the Fuel Gage

Anyone ever calibrate their fuel gage? Unlike past gages I've owned, this one seems to be working but it reads full until I'm about 1/2 full, then it starts moving. I'm wondering if this could be as simple as an adjustment screw either at the sending unit or at the gage itself.

The sending units I'm familiar with.....

require you to cut/bend the swing arm at installation. The modification is dependant upon the depth of the tank and not the shape. However, I agree that most gauges do not read linearly. What I have done is to fill the tank and keep track of how many gallons I add to full and the reading of the gauge at that fill-up. At least then I know how many gallons I am down at a particular gauge reading. If there is a better way, I don't know of it.

type of fuel gauge?

Type of gauge? I'm not sure - I'll find out this weekend. At the same time, I'll check the back...it would be really cool to find an adjustment screw on the back but I'm not optimistic. The only "fact" I have is through several boats, I've never had an accurate gauge. I keep accurate track of my hours and fuel quantity used, but a diesel heater off the same tank tends to skew the data.

I had a similar problem

I had (just sold it) a '88 Hunter 285. I added an electronic fuel gauge and, from the start, it would show Full until I had 1/2 tank, then it would drop as it should have. After 1 couple of years of living with it, I decided to fix it..whatever it took...Turns out, my orginal sending unit was too long and was not set to the correct position. I took off the old one, measured the depth of the tank and got the RIGHT-sized unit at WM. I installed it (reading the directions the FIRST time, and it wirked like a charm ever since! Moral of the story? Measure the tank depth, get the right-sized unit, and foolow he installation directions.
