I am planning a trip to Caladesi Island the week of March 24th. First time there. It's not to far, a day trip from St Pete I hope. Caladesi has a state park with 100 slips, first come first served. Are the slips available during the week? I called them but they weren't very clear. I got one of those sometimes,.. sometimes not answers. Where should I look to drop anchor if I get there and no slips are available? Anyone else planning a trip there that week? Jack

Headed that way also

Myself and at least one other boat are headed that way the latter part of May. I looked at the charts and seems like some awfully skinny water getting in there. Does anyone have more info on this. Can boats with 4'6" draft make it in there.

Most times O.K.

You are right it is a little skinny. Very soft bottom and except at low tide at the turn in the mangroves the water way is clear.

Is there

Paul, is there a marked channel going in there, or is it just open. I have come out of Dunedin, and Hurrican Pass, and it kind of reminds me of S.Texas, with all the skinny water. We barely got out of there, staying in the marked channel, and bumped lightly a couple of times.

Marked channel

Yes, there is a sign posted in Hurricane Pass in effect it says Caladesi Island "that way" :) I think 210 degrees. You will see markers into the island when you get over there about a mile. Hurricane Pass is a little tight but it is deep enough. If you would like a better way in, use the inter-coastal from the north. Just get into it north of Three Rooker Island, follow south you can sail this part of the inter-coastal keeping to the west of the channel. Pass through the bridge use radio channel #9 for bridges in Fla. It is on demand. Then turn right to Hurricane Pass and Caladesi Island.

Thanks Paul

That pretty well matches my somewhat feeble memory. My charts don't show the private markers which is what had me kind of worried.

The controlling depth on the chanel is 8'.

But I would not approach an entry from the Gulf as the water gets real skinny there. Coming from St. Pete I would go in The Clearwater Pass or pick up the ICW beyond the Three Rooker Bar. If my memory don't fail me you pick up the private markers at the ICW G15. The private aids will parallel the Causeway leading to Honeymoon Island. Along the private aids there is an indicator with a sign on it where you can make your turn towards the entry markers or you may wait for the Honeymoon island ferry and follow it in. I have seen depths of 6-7 feet on the approach so a draft of 4'6" should be OK. During the working week there should be plenty of slips available. In the weekends they get a lot of boats that go just for the day and leave before sundown. On Holiday weekends it may get full with weekenders. Inside the basin there is no anchorage and stay clear of the ferry docks. Take plenty of sun tan lotion and mosqito repelent.
