Cal Cal 39 Washington
I have a cal 39 and recently found there was some water intrusion into a foam filled section of the forward portion of the keel.

Does anyone know how the Cal 39 keels are built. Specifics like actual shape of the lead ballast, areas of fairing, compartments filled with foam?

I suspect this is a smallish area in the leading edge area forward of the lead ballast section.

I would like to know more before I dig into this project but I think I'll be able to dig and vacuum out the bad foam then fill in with new foam and glass it over again.

The water got in through a bolt hole, in the forward part of the bilge, that was not sealed and so far the water intrusion seems to be not more the a few inches down. After a bit of vacuuming most of the water and wet foam seems to be out.

The foamed in area is covered by original glass lay-up and looks much like the rest of the bilge.

Thanks for any input.

update (still looking for drawing)

I was able to clean out the small amount of wet foam foam and refill.

I cut open the area with small hole saw and removed wet foam with shop-vac. With the area clean and dry I filled it with closed cell expanding foam. Now I can glass the area over and get on with other projects.

I would still like to see a detailed drawing of the keel. I did get a look at a friends Cal-39 drawings but they are not for my model and there appear to be variations on the build up of the keels for the Cal-39's. Older versions had a bolt on cast iron keel then they went to an encapsulated lead ballast keel. The one drawing I saw shows a note about bolts in the keel but not does not actually show the bolts installed. Maybe they are for tooling purposes not fastening to the hull.

It would be really nice to find someone that actually worked for Jensen Marine and/or Mr Lapworth. There must be someone out there that has more info than the old sales brochure.

Thanks for your help in finding a drawing.
