Hello, I have a 1969 Cal 34 with tiller steering and I'm not sure if the tller is original as it seems a bit flimsy. Can anyone out there confirm the dimensions of an original Cal 34 tiller, or tell me where I can buy a new one. A photo of the tiller to rudder post connection would be a big help. Google H&L marine wood works in Compton California. They make everything wooden for boats. I bought my Cal 34 tiller there. I would suggest getting a tiller that bends and raises up as high as possible but is still strong since looking over the cabin of a 34 and holding the tiller is difficult. There is a 75 yr old sailor here that is the man to beat in all the racer/cruiser events. The only boat of any kind to give him a hard time is a new 45 foot First Beneteau. He has beaten the Beneteau a few times also. He races a 1967 Cal 34 with a tiller, and a 185% genoa. He bought his boat new, and has raced it all these years starting in the San Fransisco Bay when it was new. He has attached a raised stainless steel tiller contraption to the top of his tiller that swings in both directions depending on what side of the boat he's sitting on. Somewhere here in the archives of this web site (if u can find it) A 34 owner uploaded the original hand book for the Cal 34's with the specs and line drawings for everything. Since they've changed the Cal section, I don't know how to find it. If u can get to the archives of the Cal section u will enjoy having the hand book. It covers even the motors, and has the original brochures.

Check the chandlery here

We've got tillers in just about any size/shape you'd want. On a 1969 boat you can be pretty sure the tiller is not original.

Thanks for the speedy responses. I have already contacted H&L but they say they do not have a stock tiller for the Cal 34 and would require dimensions, but as I say I'm not sure if my tiller is original. Can you please tell me what is the overall length of your tiller including the width and height at the butt. Interisting info about the elderly sailor. The previous owner of my boat also owned it from new and single handed it till he was 82 years old and sadly passed away at age 83. Regards, Peter Mc Tague

I will take a photo of my tiller when I go to the boat. In the meantime try Steve Seal. area code 516/521-7730 He also has a web site, seal spars. Or go to the Cal 20 website, they have his link there. He is a world class racer/sailor and was the original rigger for all Cal yachts. He bought all the molds and equipment for his business. He went on the first sea trial on the the first Cal 34 built, along with Bill Lapworth the naval architect of Cal Yachts.
