I am purchasing a 1987 Cal 33 and woodwork needs to be done. The teak and Holly sole is a Veneer and either needs sanding or stripping. Any experience? Also, is his sole glued down? There are no visible top screws or fasteners. Thanks in advance. Rick

cabin sole

The section in the foward cabin and the aft sections seem to be glued however the other sections are screwed. You must remove the center sections first. The screws are under the lip of the middle section. Also you will find an additional keel bolt under the aft section of the center portion. As for finishing i am also doing the same. They were stripped of varnish tehn sanded and given 4 coats of varnish. good luck. Matthew Cusumano

Refinishing sole

I refinished the sole in my 1988 Cal39 and had problems where I sanded thru the veneer - be very careful. Also areas where all the old varnish was sanded away turned out a different shade than areas where some varnish was left - might need to seal the sanded surface before the new varnish is done? My sole is glued to the stringers - no visible screws. Had to refinish it in place unfortunately - difficult job.

Sole Man

I am starting the refinishing process on my Cal 33-2. I am contemplating removing the main cabin sole and replacing the 1/2 in. with 3/4 in. teak and holly and adding a 1/4 in on top of the forward section that is glued down. For those of you who have replaced the main cabin sole it appears to be screwed down via the flange that is exposed when taking the center section off. Is this the only place it is secured or is it glued in place as well? The other option is to overlay the entire existing sole with 1/4 in teak and holly. Looking for any thoughts/suggestions. Thanks Tim
