Hi
How many Cal 30 owners out there?
I posted a question and only got one answer. Is there so few of them left? I would love to hear from some owners. What kind of sailing do you do? Where do you sail? I would love to hear about some of your experiences. What modifications did you make? What works, what did not work? What do you like about your cal 30?

I own a 1965 cal 30. I have owned it since 1995. She sailed in the TransPac when she was still fairly new. The owner prior to me sailed her to mexico from San Francisco and I have sailed her extensively on Puget Sound and off the Oregon coast. I have made A LOT of changes to her both for liveabard comfort and for bluewater sailing. About 4 years ago I became very busy with other things and so she has been sitting on the hard for the 4 years. I plan on putting my house for sale late next spring and will move aboard and cruise when it finally sells. Among other things I have, rebuilt her engine beds, enclosed the head to port and moved the icebox to starboard opposite the head. I installed wheel steering, Proful roller furling, large Barient winces on the coach roof along with rope clutches. I added several cockpit drains (2 1" and 4 1.5") as they have a large cockpit. I installed very large Barient winches opposite the helm and let all lines aft of the helm. This allows me to control the boat easily from the helm and insures that any passengers are not constantly moving to accomodate me. I did extensive mahogany work in the two quarterbirths, installed a propane stove top, and completey removed and rebuilt the galley to give more usable space and add two water tanks, and so much more it's difficult to write about. Also, you asked about the windows. They are more suited as patio doors rather then serious boat windows. I removed mine and replaced all the side ports with thru-bolted Lexan. I have several photo's posted on webshots. Let me have your email address and I can send you a link. In the photo's you can see how I re-arranged the galley. One of the advantages of moving the ice box forward was that it gave me lots of room under the galley and I mounted one 16 gallon water tank and one 12 gallon tank. There was also room for a 6 gallon hot water tank. Under the dinnette I have a 36 gallon water tank. Total water capacity is approx 70 gallons. I moved the fuel all the way aft with two 11.5 gallon tanks. My battery banks consist of 4 group 31 deep cycle batteries and a seperate battery for the motor. All batteries can be combined for starting the engine. I also installed much heavier chainplates and went up to 1/2" turnbuckles and 3/8" standing rigging. The main has two reef points and it can be reefed from the cockpit. This also makes it much easier to stow the main when I'm sailing back into the marina.

Wow. Things seem a little slow on the board. After 4 years away from the boat I was hoping to find something active enough to rekindle my knowledge. I'm kind of wondering if there's anyone else here. Oldguy30, I wish you the best of luck with your project. Your CAL 30 is a stout little boat that,with a few modifications. can handle about anything.

The previous owner made lots of changes and upgrades, we also have just painted everything above the hull, only things left are to put a stripe on and a Cal-30 decal we had made. The additions include:

This is our 3rd sailboat, we had sailed Macgregor 26's previously. She's fast and perfect for weekends and week long stays. She's a freshwater boat, we have a 1,200 square mile shoreline lake perfect for gunkholing.

A great boat and by all accounts by our research everyone that has owned one has good things to say. Ya'll stay in touch.
