When I wanted to upgrade the locker hardware on my 1987 Cal 28 I unexpectedly found the 3"x2" butt hinges on the lazaret (large starboard locker, which, please, don't ever call anything like this a "sail locker"--you'd be out of your mind to stuff sails in there!) to be hard to replace. Nobody makes the nice beefy cast stainless hinges that you can find in the 2"x2" size, and in fact almost nobody makes 3"x2" hinges with fast (sealed) pins that can't be taken apart. The only satisfactory piece I could find is a nice hinge by Perko, model 1002-007:http://www.go2marine.com/frameset.jsp?servletPath=/g2m/action/GoBPage/id/86717F/hiLiteSku/86718/categoryId/12700/The boat has one pair of 3"x2" butt hinges and 3 sets of 2"x2" (the anchor locker looks like it would have the 3"x2" but I measured them and they are the smaller size). Using the cast 316 stainless 2"x2" hinges with 2 holes is a nice upgrade for the smaller hinges--the 2 holes will take bigger fasteners than the 3-hole. The middle of the 3 holes on the Perko hinge don't line up precisely with the originals, so expect some drilling or epoxying. I've already received mine and they are sturdy and heavier-duty than the originals.
