I am the new owner of a 1978 Cal 25 MK II. I am seeking any information those familiar with this boat have to share but more specifically how can I tell if mine is the regular draft or a shallow draft keel? Would the HIN tell that info? Thanks.

Not to be too much of a smart ass (okay baybe a little:ass: ) but... I think the keel would tell you that faster than hunting down the HIN info.

Here is the spec sheet for your boat

where is your draft with respect to this spec sheet?

Assuming the boat is in the water, you may have to jump in with a mask and take a look…

If the boat isn’t in the water, I don’t think we can help you too much..

Does the seller know anything about the boat? Might ask them…

When I bought my Cal I discovered this site on the boat brand.
You may find ideas shared.

@rgranger had the quickest/safest/cheapest approach, dive into the water and look.

Beyond knowing a label for the boat, I’m not sure that is of much use. Knowing the actual depth beneath the waterline is important. Only way to be accurate is to load up the boat and measure. You may add a bunch of goodies and heavy things to the boat and find it sits several inches deeper than the bare hull of the boat, used to give it a label. That is the critical difference and will become evident as you try to sneak over a 5ft deep sandbar with your boat shoal keel down 5.4ft because you added 3 extra lead acid batteries to your power storage.

Good luck with your new to you Cal boat. Sail free.
