Cal 25-2 Spring Lines

I have a 1980 Cal 25 and would like some advise on spring lines. The boat does not have a quarter or mid ships cleat, and a rail that prevents running a line to one if I installed a new cleat. Currently I run a line from the bow down along the side to a dock cleat off the stern, and a line from the stern to a dock cleat by the bow. I don't like the lines rubbing against the side of the boat. Any suggestions?

If you have a genoa track, you could get a cleat for that or how about installing a middle cleat on the dock. Will running one spring from the winch make a difference?

for spring lines, longer is better. Put the lines ouside the fenders you s/b using to keep the boat off the dock. don't mess with midship cleats.

Don't know your slip / mooring arangement. Here all of our docks are floating and all marina slips have a full length floating finger on one side only (two boats share the space between two fingers). Using the bow and stern cleats for both the dock lines and the spring lines, as you described, works for me. I always have a breast line attached to by aft lower stay attachment mount for assisting in docking only.

I kind of reverse the normal spring line layout on my Cal 25-2. I have midship cleats on the finger piers on both sides so I run a spring line from it to the bow cleat and the another line from it to the stern cleat on both sides.

Hang a short length of line in a loop from a stanchion or lifeline. Make it loop down to just below the toe rail. Run the springs through the loop. This will pretty much stop them from rubbing the hull, but may depend on how high your rail is off the dock.

IIRC, does your Cal 25 have the flush deck like a Cal 20? If so, Ron's idea would work, but you also might want to consider adding a midship cleat and RUB STRAKES to avoid having the line chafe on the edge of the cabintop.

On your Catalina 25 we didn't have a midship cleat and used the jib sheet winches as the boat end spring point.

We moved to a fixed dock and the problem became moot.
