Here are two sets of pics of our Cal 20 restoration in progress: http://homepage.mac.com/bear33/PhotoAlbum14.html http://homepage.mac.com/bear33/PhotoAlbum15.html As evident, our first objective is the keel. The pictures show the before and after of our scraping, grinding. We would have liked to have sand-blasted, but didn't have the means to move it somewhere to have it done, or to do it in place. We took it down to bare metal, then coated with Rust Lok (a form of acid) and then Pettit metal primer. I'll soon have another set of pictures showing this weekend's work, when we dropped the keel and cleaned the top of the flange and the bottom of the bulb. Next, we'll be filling in imperfections with epoxy and microbubbles, and doing 2-3 coats of epoxy barrier coat before anti-fouling paint. It's interesting that there was nearly a quarter inch of resin on the top of the flange. It was breaking out and rusting beneath, so we removed it all. If the flange matches up with the hull okay, we'll likely use a think layer of Life Caulk to replace it. We are also replacing the keel bolts with stainless steel ones. Fun project-- we hope to have it back in the water in August. We bought the boat just two weeks ago, and we were borrowing the trailer until we're ready to be back in the water. Any suggestions or advice on remounting the keel would be appreciated. Thanks! Jim

Cal 20 keel bolts

Jim: Really inspiring! I'm working an a 'new' Cal 20 myself, will get to the hull next season: topsides for now. My major project at this stage is fixing delamination, which is extensive. How was it actually removing the keel bolts? I'm going to replace mine with stainless steel, and I'm nervous about the original ones shearing when I try to get the nuts off and the bolts out. By the way: in case you haven't run into him: Steve Seals at Seals Spars and Rigging has stainless bolts available, as well as a lot of other Cal 20 parts. He's really helpful. You're going to enjoy sailing her once she's in. Love mine. Dick
