Hey all.

The PO left a Caframo Stor-Dry dehumidifier on the boat when I bought it. As I live in Seattle and we are approaching our wet season, It seems like a good idea to get something like this going.

I do have a hesitation about leaving a heat source plugged in and running when no one is there, but the product seems to be specifically made for this application.

Any thoughts?

Also, are there a there any other tips / tricks to combat mildew and condensation this time of year?

Thanks!

Lots of air movement..Fans on the floor pointing upwards. All storage compartments, cabinets, lockers, bilge, left open + cushions tilted up. Ventilation... Ventilation... Ventilation... Ventilation... Pine'o'pine left in the shower sump and bilge helps...makes the boat smell nice and clean.

I had the West Marine equivalent. It slightly warmed the hot humid air inside the boat down here in FL.
I picked up a real Kenmore dehumidifier at a yard sale and that really helped.

I've been using one for about 10 years, here in S. Calif. it's enough to keep the mold from growing in the dark hidden places during rainy season. I use it year round when not aboard.

I used one (sometimes two on a larger boat) during SoCal winters in Marina del Rey. It made a big difference. You are correct. They are not a heat source; they warm air so that you get convection currents. My slip was shaded in the afternoon in winter, so it was an important piece to keep the mildew at bay. My current slip is in a much dryer location, so I have become more lax.

This month's Practical Sailor has the results of their non-power dehumidifiers if you don't want to go with the power one.

I use a non-electrical De-humidifier. It is the chemical type. They work pretty good for me and I use them when I am not on the boat. It is amazing how much moisture that they will collect. The cool part is that you can find them in Bed, Bath, and Beyond or, sometimes, your local grocery store.

How many/type would you go through in a summer month Bad?
I know your humidity can be up there with ours in the summer.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
It generally lasts two to three months before I have to empty and refill. They usually go all winter without needing a refill.
