you'll have to explain? I went with the "as it came from the PO" bracket for the antenna. I replaced the comet antenna that was there because it was in pieces when i bought the boat :p

Looking at you antenna (black at an angle, laying down), is why @LloydB questioned the VHF reception.
Unless that is a unique antenna, VHF antenna's radiate best in a 360 degree circle. Standing straight up maximizes your radiated signal. Best to reach the nearest receiver and best to receive return transmissions.

oh! the antenna is mounted in parallel with the mast. the black at an angle is the b&g wind sensors. its the white and blue unit on the starboard side of the mast mounted just at the masthead sticking straight up.
