Ground cable coming off the base of the main is for what?I am afraid to hook up to batteries because of a lighting strike taking out the bilge when I am away,does anyone know if this is a ground for the batteries and should it ge hooked to betteries.The advice about the shore power got me out of a jam the very day it came out Thanks alot. common ground

Frank there should be only one common ground on a boat so as to avoid electrolysis and there isn't the right place. Your post isn't clear - by "main" I assume you mean the mast base. The grounding wire you see at the mast base should go to a keel bolt and is there to carry an electrical strike to the keel and water rather than throughout the hull. If I misunderstand your question, hope this doesn't further confuse your issue. Don
