Can anyone tell me what kind of wood may have been used in the cabind of 1972 Contest 31, Hull #51? Teak or Mahogany? Thank you, Peter Kafer

Pictures of the wood grain help a lot.

Since there are many tropical hard woods that are suitable and you don't explain your need to know it can be a bit of a mystery. Do you need to make repairs? Or are you making an addition?

Ross, he is from Subtle, KY.

I am not surprised he is playing his cards close to his vest. All kidding aside, a picture would help immensely.

That appears to be one of the African mahoganies

or it may be lauan (so called Philippine mahogany)stained with a Min-wax mahogany stain. I don't think that it is Honduras mahogany and definitely not teak.

Thanks, Ross. Our assessment was that it is some kind of mahogany. I'd be interested in the thoughts of any others. Caleb, FYI, Subtle, KY is one of those unfortunate places not located on any coast. That doesn't keep us from sailing. We own a boat that we sail on an inland lake as well as a Pearson 323 that we live on 4-5 months of the year in the islands. Our friend who is refurbishing the Contest is doing so with the intention of a transatlantic crossing. We hope to help crew on this trip.

ndaoway, take the picture to some of the shops

that supply the local cabinet makers and see what they are offering. The problem you are likely to encounter is finding waterproof plywood. I presume that he won't want to spring for solid lumber.

Thanks again for the suggestions. I just got an e-maoal from the Contest folks in Holland. The wood used was sipo-mahogany.
