Please settle our difference of opinion. I replaced my cabin sole last year. My sailing pal asked me why i refinished the bottom of the sole as well as the top. I told him it only made sense to protect all sides of the sole. He says its completely unnecessary to put a finish on the bottom..."it's teak, after all!" Can anyone give a definitive answer on this subject so we can move on to other, more interesting arguments? Thanks, mates. Jeff

From experience - seal the bottom with epoxy!!

Then use 5-6 coats urethane or varnish on surface. Doubt very much if your sole is solid teak. They are usually a teak and holly etc. laminate over marine ply. You have to seal the entire surface.

Plywood needs all the help it can get.

The teak and holly surface is only about as thick as a postcard and moisture can attack from the bottom or the edges as well as the top. Given the cost of the material I would use extraordinary efforts to make it keep.

do all

I did the top and bottom as long as the edges. Seal out all the water.

Sealing the bottom of the floor.

If you have the floor pieces out to refinish, put a coat on all surfaces. I agree with jimq26 about using epoxy on the bottom and sides.

solid teak sole

I'm the only hunter owner that has a solid teak with holly inlaid sole I know of. (About 60 hours of hard labor to fabricate the floor) Island packets are solid teak with something besides holly placed inbetween the strips of teak. I epoxied the bottom and sides of my sole and urethaned the top. If you seal only one side teak will warp with humidity. When it dries out it will come back flat though. Ask me how I know. (I didn't seal one of my access boards at first and had to go back and seal it.

Thanks mateys

Thanks to you all...I feel like I haven't wasted time and materials. Of course the sole is laminate on ply...if only I had the time to lay it myself. My pal and I are already disagreeing about destinations this summer...we'll settle that one ourselves. Thanks for all the good (as usual) advice. Jeff
