O22 cabin roof
Hi Chris- Have an older (1976) 22, and am doing fairly extensive refitting right now. Reworking the teak handrails, the teak hatch slides, upgrading the 12 volt electrical panel, the 110 volt shore power adding bow pulpit ,etc. In other words, I'm all over it, have sampled the cabin roof and deck construction extensively. It looks to me like the cabin roof in its entirety, as well most of the deck, is balsa-cored. It seems as though it would be impractical to make part of a laminated, molded interior/exterior cored and part of it uncored. The coring on the older boats, like mine, has pretty well disintregated in areas where there has been water intrusion and subsequent rot. This is part of the reason for the refit I'm doing now. If you remove your bulkhead-mounted electrical panel, you wil find it is hollow behind it. Somehow, wiring had to be first connected and then distributed to various parts of the vessel. So that is one exception to the coring, there may be others. Good Luck and Fair winds, Conway Deitrick
