I have an 86 H34. I am interested in a diesel fuel heater for the cabin. Would like one that can be used when underway. Prefer one that does not use electrical power. Is there such an animal and has anyone put one on a H34? Bob

Heater

I just instatlled a Toyoset N2700 Cabin Heater. It is a VENTED kerosene heater with thermo controls and safety switches galore. If you are interested let me know. shaytoon112 @yahoo.com Also runs on Diesel 1

Here we go......

We went through this last winter and when I told what I do I got jumped on from all sides, but just for you: I use a Kerosene, unvented heater and leave the drop boards out of the companionway as well as the cabintop hatch open. This causes a draft like the indian tee-pee's and there is no smell or chance for affixiation. The heater costs about $200.00 new and uses a gallon of kerosene in about twenty-four hours. It puts out 8,000 btu's. I have never slept with it on and don't ever plan to. The idea of an untended open flame on a boat scares me to death and I don't care if it's vented or not. I also don't sail in subzero weather so it's not a problem.Just crawl in the ole' sleeping bag. And, that's the all of it... Good Luck and for all those people ready to jump down my throat, I do know what carbon Monoxide is and my Monoxide alarm tells me there is none in my boat... See Ya

Ron, Don't Sweat It

Ron sounds like he is taking all due precaution. There are some potential risks though that should be addressed so I thought I would repeat a post I made when he made his earlier this year. With the Kerosene heater going and the hatch open the air in the boat is probably as good as anywhere else in Houston, but that is only because of all the Yankees who have moved in down there. Same thing happened to us in Austin. A very real concern Submitted by Rick Webb on 02/27 at 07:42AM regarding Hunter 26 Histotoxic hypoxia (carbon monoxide poisoning) is a bitch. Carbon monoxide has a 300 time greater affinity for saturating hemoglobin than does oxygen. Which means a dab will do ya, do ya in. Anyone who uses a heater that burns anything needs to do some reading on what the symptoms are so that they may recognize them and get some help before it is too late. Those who smoke or has consumed alcohol is even more susceptible. Please please please be careful. We want y'all around in the spring.

Digital CO Dector

Here's a suggestion. If one wanted to try a setup that is known to put out CO then, if you have an inverter on board, get a digital carbon monoxide detector and plug it into a low duplex receptical or a short estension cord so it is near the floor. We use one on our boat as well as a plain smoke detector (no readout) even though we have a vented heater. If you're in a small anchorage on a windless day it may be possible for one to get asphyxiated by fumes from a generator or the engine while charging batteries. There have been numerous deaths on Lake Mead under these type circumstances.
