I want to install a cabin heater in my Hunter Pasage 42 (1995). I have natural gas and of course plenty of diesel. So I am thinking about a diesel heater with a low pressure fuel pump. I sail year around in Texas so not extremely cold weather. Any recommendations as to what brand and size (BTU's)?

Cabin Heater

We have a diesel fired Force 10 heater on our 40.5 that has an output of approximately 33,000 btu/hr. We have found this is plenty of capacity in the Pacific Northwest, as we can maintain 70F in the cabin when it's 32F outside. The temperature difference (70F - 32F) is directly proportional to the heater capacity, so if you were to size the heater, say for 45F outside, then that would point you toward a ~22,000 btu/hr capacity.

Where to put it

I have tried to think of where I would put a wall mounted heater. I don't want to install a forced air system as we plan on heading south in a few years. Most of the time we use the ac/heat pump.

Only Heat?

Jack - Why not look at installing a Reverse Cycle Air Conditioning unit? Mine keeps the boat real comfortable year 'round and I'm only a few miles away from you. That way you'll not only have heat during our relatively mild winters, but you'll also have some really necessary a/c during our sizzlin' summers! Fair winds, Steve S/V Options

Why not add a forced air Webasto or Ardic

diesel unit to the ducting you already have in place for your heat pump? The ducting is he hardest part to install. Ron Hughes s/v "Best Revenge" H 40.5

A Spot for the Hot!

See the attached pic for a solution on an H37C. I have a heat pump on my H37C, only because it came with the boat. It takes the chill out of the air, but in no way is it as hot as a heater. To my understanding they aren't designed to be. I think (key word think) that is why you don't see them in houses anymore. They were big in the 70's...???

But where to put it?

I'm looking at the same issue with my 37.5. Might be heading south shortly and will need heat in addition to my ac units. Problem is, I can't figure out where to mount one in my boat. Specs for the Force units say they need at least 24" clearance, and the units are 16". There no spot on my boat where I can get that much clearance. Any suggestions?

Short Note

Mount the heater within inches of the sole for best results...We liveaboard year-round and I learned the hard way on our last boat ('75 h30) and only had to do it once our current H40. The heater is a Newport by Dickenson, diesel fired with a 3" vent pipe through an existing cabin vent hole. Believe me when I say that going from 23" above the sole to 3" is worth whatever it takes to get it done. Also uses no power when in use and burns fine under sail as well. I moved the pedestal under the salon table back by 10 inches and moved the table top back about 6 inches, had to make a new center section because the compression post passes thru, but it is worth it to have warm knees and feet.

JACK, YOUR P42 DOES NOT HAVE...

heat pumps in the main and aft cabin like ours, which work great by the way? The main drawback is you need either shore power or the generator running. Would you please let me know what you end up doing? Terry

Espar

Jack, I have an Espar diesel heater installed on my H460 in Toronto. Works well, great forced air heat and low battery draw. However you can't use the factory installed plastic duct work - won't take the high temperature output of the heater. Must install metal ductwork which is a lot of work. Good luck.
