My wife and I live in Northwest Florida and have a 2008 Hunter 216 with a leak at the hatch edge. We have modified the mast boot and caulked the mast similar to the suggestion by Paul Wash in this forum but the water does not seem to be coming down from the mast but from wind driven water during our typical rainstorms. We have installed weatherstripping on the hatch but to no avail. Any suggestions?

The only suggestion I have is to make sure the two pins at the front of the hatch go into the holes by the mast. Also make sure the hatch boards are installed correctly. The rounded edges of the hatch boards should face forward. If you don't do this its possible the boards wont seat all the way down and could hold the hatch up allowing water to come in the sides

One of the drawbacks of a boat minus a bilge pump. I run my halyards outside my sail cover and that has helped with the rain coming down the mast. Still end up with a 1/2 inch of water in the boat after a good rainstorm. Good excuse to clean out the interior.

I had this problem 4 years ago. Solved it by applying a lot of white vinyl tape around the top of the mast boot, so it was really watertight, and then filling the sail groove in the back of the mast with silicone caulking above the mast boot, and making a caulking "nose" facing aft over the tape. Hasn't leaked a drop since!

Re: Hunter 216 Cabin Leaks

One of the things that I noticed with my 216 (which was one of the early ones) is that the angle that the boards are cut is very shallow. If you combine that with any warpage and it would be no surprise that a wind driven rain could get in. Directing a hose perpendicular to the hatch boards would veriffy if that is your problem. Another trick you could try is to tape some newspaper to the inside of the boards. After a rain, see if it is wet. That could isolate the location. Good luck.
