Cabin Floor

Does anyone have any pics of what the floor looks like under the teak and holly flooring in the cabin of a 260?

Mine is damaged and I want to replace it. I'm thinking of tearing out the damaged flooring and replacing it with some rubber matting that would be cut to fit into the same recess.

What I'm trying to find out is how deep the recess is that the existing floor sits in. Also, if it is a smooth recessed pocket or if there are any ribs or obstructions in that recessed area.

Hunter uses the rib construction so I'm thinking you need something a little stiffer than rubber mat. If you are handy and have a table saw, router and hand plane you can make your own replacement sole boards.
use the old ones as a template, go to Lowes and sort throught he 3/4" cabinet grade oak for some with straight grain. Birch works too. All you want is the grain pattern to match the boards you are not going to replace, don't worry about the color unless there are major color changes (birch is bad for this). Get ahold of some aspin or other "white" "no grain" wood for the holly strips. Also pick up some teak stain for the plywood.
Cut out the plywood, mark the locations of the holly strips, and screw holes, opening etc. Measure the existing holly strips for width and cut out 1/2" by that width strips long enough to run the entire length of the sole board. Route out the plywood the correct width and 1/4" deep along the previously marked holly strip locations. Stain the plywood avoiding the strip routs. glue the strips in after the stain drys. They will stick out 1/4" Once the glue is dry plane off the strips avoiding cutting into the plywood (that is easier than it sounds BTW). Finish in your favorite sealer.
I left the strips very slightly higher than the plywood surface as that give some grip to the floor to prevent slipping.
total cost for each sole board:
$50 plywood
$5 aspin
$5 stain (1 can did all the boards BTW)
$7 polyurithain
$67 total. You can't even buy a 4x8 sheet of teak plywood for 3 times that.!!!!!

shanker;

The teal and holly sole which is either 1/4 or 5/16 board is a single piece that lays into a recessed flat surface only. I would use liquid nails to secure it weighing it down until dry and then lay a bead of the black architechual grade of pure silicon between the wall of the recess and the edge of the board. I would suggest the laminiate which is more expensive but more durable than the regular wood style.

I think you should have a look on these even and I get them laminated because it will certainly make the entire flooring durable than the regular wood style. If you wish to know more then look here.

Hunter along with all the other mfgs. got away from using the standard real teak and holly and years ago went with a laminiate which not only was more durable but less likely to rot when wet. That is the beauty about laminates.

On topic please

The H260 is a water ballast boat with the cabin deck being the top surface of the ballast tank. There is a very thin wood laminate, for looks not for structure, inserted into the fiberglass deck.

The OP was asking about the depth of the inset and the surface of it under the laminate. This can not be answered by flooring soultions of 40' boats.

Dave;

You are so correct when a question is asked about a certain boat, then respond to that specific style boat which is what I try to do as other boats generally differ in style and construction and would not be applicable. Hopefully, my responses did just that in this thread.

What type of laminate should be used on the cabin sole? Many residential types would not hold up to getting wet. Also, what laminate would be good for recovering an H-26 cabin table that's mostly sound, but ugly and has minor delam? BrianW
