Late last season, I noticed an area of the teak veneer lifting slightly when wet. Otherwise when dry it looks fine. I use household furniture oil on all the interior teak as advised by a surveyer. He considered teak oil appropriate for outside use only. I was thinking of applying several coats of varnish to prolong the life of the floor. Has anyone done this? I imagine a drawback would be that it would be slippery when wet. Anyone know if Hunter sells a precut floor and how much it costs? Thanx. alan

Hunter can supply some pieces.

Alan: Hunter can supply some pieces of teak. It depends on the year and model of your boat. After a while the discard the patterns. Give them a call and see what they can do for you. When you replace the piece you may want to consider sealing the underside and edges with epoxy (several coats). As far as varnish goes, many owners have varnished floors. It can be more slippery, but that can be resolved by using a throw rugs at the bottom of the companionway. This gives you a place to dry your feet/shoes and clean them off too. The varnished floors will start to show scratches after a while and need to be recoated after a few years.

you did not really say how bad the floor was "lifting" however if it is not a large section why don't you try to reglue the part that is lifting. A good waterproof glue or epoxy injected between the plywood and the venere will work if it is not to large or to deteratored. Lots cheaper then new sole boards.Hope this helps!I varnished my sole floor with minwax helsmans varnish and it came out great !Not really that slippery but as Steve said a throw rug or a mat will help !

My cabin sole came out great

Alan, I had exactly the same problem you did. The sole was delaminating in places. I used a hypodermic syringe filled with waterproof white glue and literally injected it beneath the raised part. Next, I put down waxed paper and then full wine bottles to weight the area down. After it was dry, I sanded the entire sole and put four coats of West Marine's Marine Finish (comparable to Cetol). It came out great - better than new. Good luck. Don Barber
