Hella fans

Jeff, two seasons ago I put 4 Hella turbo fans in my Beneteau 361 and they work terrific. Try Defender ( www.defender.com) their prices are usually better then West Marine Good luck charlie

What's the difference?

I wonder is there is a noticable difference between a turbo and a jet fan. We have three fans onboard and they all move air. I picked up a WM model #3731965 12v oscillating fan for the v-berth last season. It does what it is supposed to do--move air. We prefer the tight mesh of the fan shield that provides more protection for little fingers. It has a mounting bracket that allows mounting options. And, it is free standing until you heel, or hit rough water then it can become free flying. Charlie is right about Defender, but catch WM during a closeout and you could pick up a few fans at a reasonable price. You could check the HOW chandlery also.

One thing though

Don't look for Hella's on a close out. I bought mine in '89. They haven't changed since, so just shop price if you want them.

Auto Stores

You can buy the same stuff at an auto store for a heck of a lot less. If they rust out (and mine hasn't in six years) just get a new one. Cheaper by the dozen!!! Stu

Fans

Charlie is right on the money, and what I have in my boat...four Hella fans. Defender is usually the cheapest.

Auto-store fans are not the same.

Even though they're 12V, they usually draw more current than fans designed for boats. I replaced a car fan installed by a previous owner cause it was tripping the breaker when I turned on another fan. Since installing the Hella fans the breaker hasn't tripped. ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

Caframo

We bought the Caframo swiveling fans with a clamping bracket so we could move them around. 2 speed, low amp draw and quite. Had them for 4 years and no problems, about $40 each. Good luck Jeff

Why Hellas?

Great recommendations on Hella Fans. the only thing missing is why Hellas? First, They are the most quite fans you can have on your boat. They are called turbo fans for a reason, they move lots of air. They are adjustable, to include direction and fan speed. They are also the most durable fans you will find. Sorry Stu, but the $20 throw aways that you recommend will not match the Hellas in any phase we pointed out. After you have replaced your throw aways 4 times, (and you will) you could have bought a Hella and understood what everyone was raving about. Please note that we are in Florida and I do NOT work for anybody associated with Hella or the marine industry. Its just that in Florida, with our weather, you learn to appreciate good fans in your boat and that makes us excellant evaluators.

$20 Throw-aways

The Hella fans are great everywhere because they move a lot of air, are quiet and are power-stingy. Oscillating fans are very noisy due to the vibration - especially in sleeping areas. I have Hellas in my salon. But in the sleeping cabins I use the battery-powered, fold-up, $20 kind because they are cheap, quiet and have an adjustable speed setting. They don't oscillate, but can be directed to a specific area. They run all season on a set of batteries (4, C-size). I have had 8 or 9 in 10 years (using 3-4 at a time).

turbo or jet

thanks for all the fast replies, I think Im sold on hella fans, is a turbo worth $45.00 more than a jet??

YES

Yea they probably are worth the difference. I have the more expensive 2 speed in the front berth and the cheaper one in the back berth. The back fan I think is a single speed, I forget, but I know it is substantialy noisier.

Fan Efficiency

Fan Efficiency is one important measure of quality: Calculate rated cfm per amp, for available models.

Walmart fans draw too much current.

They are not designed for stricktly battery power. You'll go through your house batteries in far less time than if you used the correct fans. ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

Efficiency? try a computer 12V case fan

You want efficiency? At 12VDC? Try the 4 1/2" computer case cooling fans...and cheap. Mine are into their second season. Got the idea to try them after having used one on my desk for nearly five years and was suffering sticker shock at marine fan prices, when I decided to take my desk fan down to the boat...it's still there! heh Build Teak(or whatever) frames and they become a part of the decor.

Any more info on Beneteau hull cracks due to water

I just got around to reading the thread about Beneteau hull cracks. Just discovered same on my 1994 Oceanis 400 when I hauled in November. Looks like cracks in a hard-boiled egg. Is the water protection system the culprit? What did others decide to do about Beneteau?? thanks.
