We are having new cabin foam and cushions made for our Hunter 34. We are looking for expertise on foam density and thickness. We do not want to sink to the bottom while we are sleeping or sitting. Is anybody familiar with the density numbers like 38, 44, 48 and or thickness? We've thought about 5", but recommendations seem to be for 4" everywhere, including the v-berth. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

4" Extra Firm

Made my own cushions a few years ago. They had names and no numbers to describe the foam density at the wholesale supplier I used. The 4" extra firm foam worked great everywhere. I live aboard 2-3 months/year and have had no problems with it since I made them in 1994. Barry

Foam Density

We wanted a very firm foam for our sleeping berth, and we chose a foam with a density number of 55. This is too firm, almost hard. We would not go above 45 for the berth, and that might still be too firm for comfortable seating. It is hard to tell based on a little sample. Good luck

Joe, How much?

Joe, I have a 1983 H34 that I bought last year. I just called a local firm near to where my boat is stored and they wanted $34 a linear foot to recover the setees. They measure it by the legnth only, not by the width. There's approximately 30 feet of cushions just in the salon (seat and back rests). What kind of costs are you expecting? Thanks, Joe

$$$$$

The total is currently around $1700, including new foam, $18/yd material, zippers, and labor, to do the whole interior on a 34.

Try US Yacht Cushions.

US Yacht Cushions in Fl. 727/896-3284 Give them a call and try to get a comparison. They have more fabric samples and better prices than anyone that I have seen. I think that the quote for our H'31 was about $1100 Frt. PS: They have the expertise that you are looking for. They can tell you about fabrics, foam, zippers and treatments. Most upolstery shops do not have enough experience doing this type of project to REALLY know.

Just Got Mine Done!

I just received a set of cushions from US Yacht Cushions in St. Petersburg FL. They fit great!. They offer 2 types of foam: 1.8 oz density and 2.3 oz density. Each has soft, med, firm grades. I ordered firm for the salon seat bottoms, medium for the berths and soft for the seat backs. All in 2.3 oz density. The firm was REALLY firm, but I certainly don't bottom out when I sit down. I whole heartedly reccommend US Yacht Cushions. I went to visit them and they have a computerized fabric cutter and the patterns for the H34 are on the computer. They are the originial manufacturer Hunter used for the H34 cushions! They quoted me $1150 for the basic cushion set. With options such as a contoured neck roll and knee bump on the salon cushions, high density foam and high-end sunbrella fabric, my total came out to $1900. They were shipped freight collect to California. I was so shocked to see how well these "e-mail ordered" cushions fit. My local upholstery shop quoted $4,000 to do the same job!

Combine foams.

Another option is to combine foam. If you are going to a 4/5" thickness, you could use a high density and a medium glued together. Using the higher density on the bottom and the medium on the top. This would give you a similar effect as the new mattresses that you purchase for home. For the ultimate sleeping (ultimate cost too) you can also look into a Latex Mattress. Cool in the summer, warm in the winter (Oh, what a feeling).

save and do it yourself

You can save a lot if you can do it yourself. I purchased the sunbrellla fabric for my hatch covers, winch covers, BBQ and outboard cover from "Sailmakerssupply.com" and saved a lot of money. I also recovered all the cushions in my salon on my H40 for just over $300.00

Many Thanks!!!!

We contacted USYC, Sailnet, and a couple of local shops. With our particular situation, it's working out best to have it done locally. We're having all interior cushions covered and some new foam for $1300. In the salon, the seats will have dual density foam with soft on top and quite firm on the lower 2 inches. Thanks again for all of the excellent advice from this thread.

What was your quote from US Yacht?

Joe: Did you actually get a quote from US Yacht Cushions? Just curious about the price. I assume that the freight made the biggest difference?

USYC Quote

Steve, Yes...they did give me a quote: $1150 for all cushions with their baseline fabrics. Extras were: $150 for high density foam, $150 for contoured knee and neck roll, $400 for high end fabric. Shipping via truck was $170. It all arrived in a 8ft by 4 ft by 3ft body bag. Joe

Steve Dion

We also got a quote from USYC. The basic cost was $1350 plus any special foam considerations and shipping. The fabric we chose was fairly basic in price. There are some assumptions here but USYC would have probably cost us about $1600 versus our local $1300. I'm sure USYC would have been competitive in quality and fit.

Thanks Joe

Just wanted to confirm what I though I knew. Joe O: Did they put vinyl material on the under sides of the cushions (v-berth and aft berths)?

J

Vinyl on Back

Steve, Yes...USYC put white vinyl on the underside of all the berth and seat bottom cushions. The seat backs did not have any vinyl. All cushions came with velcro hook and loop attachments. Joe P.S.: If you're nearby and would like to take a look at the cushions on my H34 in Alameda, drop me an e-mail: joeyooh@juno.com

Steve Dion - Why Vinyl?

Steve, Why the vinyl on the bottoms. Is it to protect against moisture?

Exactly!

Joe M: They use vinyl on the areas that are in contact with any fiberglass. On our boat this included the v-berth and the aft berth. The settee area is mounted on a wood material. If you get mildew from condensation on fabric, you are going to play hell getting it out of the fabric without damaging the fibers. With vinyl, you can use a little soap and water or even a little X-14 to clean it up and kill any spores. We have a slight leak in our water tank which is in the aft berth. If we did not have vinyl on these cushions they would be mildewed and would also be soaking up the water too. So I suppose that it is not a necessity but is a damn good idea! In our case we use the boat year round so we do not have the luxury of taking the cushions out of the boat in the winter. Some winters in the California Delta can be very damp and prone to mildew growth.
