Don't have a link or any other info except what was monitored over chan 16. This afternoon around 12:30 or so, I was working on my outboard and listening to chan 16 on the VHF. Out of the blue, this whale watching boat starts calling for the Coast Guard Station San Diego to report a 40' Cabin Cruiser ablaze off Point Loma. The skipper of the commercial boat said he thinks he see 5 people on the boat. He also gives the Lat/Long of the burning boat. The communications between the comm. boat and CG was very well orchestrated. Within minutes, and I mean like less than two, Mission Beach Life Guards and San Diego Life Guards dispatch rescue boats. There was also a Fire boat dispatched. A Navy vessel was 9 NM out and indicated they would route to the scene. A few minutes later, the comm. boat reported people in the water. He also reported the burning boat motors were still engaged and the boat was now running free, and burning. He also said another cabin cruiser picked up the people in the water. About 10 minutes into this whole ordeal, both the Navy vessel (remember, it was 9 nm out) and a CG Helo arrived. The pilot of the helo issued a 2 nm restricted zone around the boat. The fire boat arrived and was granted permission to follow the boat and attempt to douse. He said he could stay a safe distance from the craft. By 12:50, every thing was winding down and the CG thanked all vessels who responded and assisted. At 12:55, Vessel Assist arrive to claim salvage rights. LOL This was a very interesting ordeal. I am proud of my fellow boaters. Now, back to repairing my outboard. If this shows up locally, I'll get a link.
