Fabric and foam for new covers are expensive. Rochford Supply (use Google to find) in Minneapolis has a large variety of foam and are very helpfull in deciding which foam to use. They have a set of foam samples you can purchase that is a huge help. There are several suppliers on the web that have suitable materials for the cushions. If you are going to make new cockpit cushions, I suggest you use "Sunbrella" fabric. Also be sure to inquire about the type and weight of thread to use for your application. You will also need new zipper material (YKK #5) and zipper pulls. Adding piping (the original covers did not use piping) at the edges make the cushions look great as well as making them a little more durable. I will photograph my cabin and cockpit cushions this weekend and post them next week. For those who would like a set of the patterns, I propose that I send them to the first person who makes a copy and sends them on to the next person. I purchased 36" wide "plotter paper" to copy the patternes onto from a reprographics/blueprint store.

One more thought. I used closed cell foam instead of open cell foam for my cusions. It doesn't absorb water, they float (incase you sink), closed cell foam is firmer so it doesn't need to be a thick (more head room), and is stiffer (stays flat better). It also makes a better thermel layer, keeping you a little warmer on those early spring and late fall trips.

Fastening the Seat Back
I just had ours redone. The previous owner had the cushions, but the apolostery had been removed... must have been trashed. Anyway, they now look GREAT. But one thing I don't know... What's the best way to fasten the back to the boat? Right now they're just sitting there, but they always fall off of course -- everything moves in a sailboat!
