C320 source of water in locker ?

I pumped about 8 gallons of water from the starboard locker that contains the waste holding tank and batteries. It appears slightly brown, has no odour, and is not from the waste tank. The batteries are up to normal level. Short of removing the floor, I can't see any obvious place from the liquid to enter that cabinet. The through-hulls are dry. Shouldn't that cabinet drain into the bilge ? Any ideas ?

Don't know if that area should drain into the bilge or not. If the through hulls are dry, seems the only other place water could be coming in would be around the port lights over that area. How long has it been since you were last at the boat...had lots of rain...cushions soggy...wood under the port lights showing water damage?

water in bilge

Did you over fill the water tank? The brown color is likely residue from the construction of the hull. I noticed a lot of "silt" in my blilge and water in the locker when I overfilled the water tank and it leaked through the top.

Ron's update Aug.3

I learned something new. All water doesn't end up in the bilge ! After removing the floor sections covering the various bilge compartments, I found the problem. The bilge pump level is too high before the switch is triggered. The water runs towards the bow, nearly filling each compartment as it goes. The bilge directly under the mast has a 1" hole drilled through the port side where the mast cables are fed. They go through another hole in the cabinet and on to the electrical panel. These holes were never sealed with anything. When the boat heels to port the water runs through the holes into the cabinet. It can also work its way around the front of the bilge to the starboard locker. Any water entering the galley cabinet from the hot water tank area does not go to the bilge. I will call Catalina about this one. I was surprised to find side compartments to the bilge compartments that act as an overflow. Water could sit there all season, if you didn't look for it. Perhaps it was corrected after 1994 production.

Known problem

The early boats had more of a problem. I think some changes were made in later production. There has been tons of discussion on this issue. Check the C320 website for more info on how oners have delt with this problem.

Check archives

I don't see the article now on the C320 site. But search the archives here for "water bilge shallow" for boat type 320. Check year 1999, 2000, 2001.

thanks Jon

The links were very helpful. I also talked with a Catalina rep. Outside of keeping things dry, they did not know of a permanent fix. A dripless stuffing box would help. I will keep the center boards out for now and see what happens.

Limber holes

Once the bilge pump (before I put in the anti-syphon valve) on my Cat 27 blew a fuse and, when hard on the stbd tack, the bilge pump outlet became submerged and allowed a syphon of the water from San Francisco Bay into the bilge enough to soak the carpeting. I likewise found all the lockers port & starboard with several inches of water that I couldn't figure out how to get out. I finally drilled several small limber holes thru the bottom of the front of each locker, just above the cabin sole, so the lockers could drain out onto the cabin floor, and thence to the bilge. Carpet covers them, but still allows them to drain the lockers.
