C310 - I need a clue!

A couple of years ago, I stuck sound barrier material inside my engine cover. In doing so, I covered over the eye strap that the cover retaining cable attaches to.I've tried to locate it by feel by compressing the material in spots, but with no luck. I am hoping someone can post a picture, provide a description, or otherwise give me a clue, and thanks in advance if you can.Ours is C310, hull # 40, built in March 2000. Built in the California factory. I assume that there have probably been some variations in the exact location, but I'm desperate to solve this minor but irritating problem. I've also thought up some workarounds, but I'm kinda stubborn.

Thought about that.

Stu,That's one of several solutions I've thought of, but if the original strap is in there I'm going to find it someday!I just had a disturbing thought. What if I actually removed it during the install and forgot? And I've been looking for it since?My wife had a suggestion. Take out the insulation to look for it. I'm kind of trying to avoid that! Actually I'm just thankful that these are the biggest kind of problems I have

But Is It Worth It?

My question is:Did the soundproofing help at all? I wouldn't mind doing something similar to my '87 Cat 30, but I don't want to waste the time and money working on a project that has limited benefit.Anyone else out there recommend using soundproofing or is it not really worth it??Jim S/V Jimmy Dreams

Going to try the sound insulation

Jim,I have convinced myself to try the sound insulation project on my 88 Cat 30 this spring. I have researched and talked with the folks at soundown (www.soundown.com). I always thought it would make a difference, but like you how much of a difference, and was it worth the dollars and efforts. Looking at the statistical data, graphs does little to translate it to real world sound.....unitl I found the following link.http://www.glacierbay.com/insulation_ultradb.aspThey have a sound example of a uninsulated motor, and one with various brands of sound insulation. Pretty impressive... From reading all the technobabble, it is pretty hard to drown out 100 % of the low frequency diesel noises, but pretty easy to cut out the mid and upper frequency noises. It has to do with the size and construction of the material used and the ratings of the absorbortion layers vs deadening layers.Any way, come spring, I will give it a shot. I figure it has to help some and i budgeted the cost around $200-300 (Cnd $)

Insulation

guys try the insulation you wll like it I have C301988 and what I did is take a cheep fome from home depto and cut it to fit between the moter and my water lift area so the sound would not travl throw the boat then I filled my fork draw and pot draw with fome mat and Ithink this cuts the noise in half then I bought a ruber flex cupler for my drive shaft to cut down on the vibessss and made sure all my cabenet doors around the moter fit right.Now Ican here myself think down below with the moter runing.The only thing is you must run the bilge fan wile motering becouse it gets realy hot in the box and things start to get soft .Ithink Iwill leave the fome in the draws for pading but you must use fire proof fome around the moter area.Home depto fome burns like mad and should not be used I wanted to try it before I spent 300 bucks on the right stuff.

Noise reduction.

I used the WM 1-inch thick material. I covered just the engine box cover, not the back wall or under the engine. I think it's most effective with the higher frequency clattering noise. It doesn't have much effect on the lower frequency structural type noise. I would take a guess that it reduced the clattering type noise in the cabin and cockpit by maybe 25-30%. It seeded worth it to me.

Jeff...just checked your web site, that stuff is really expensive. Even West Marine is cheaper than that. I bought some of the 1/2" at WM, have not put it in yet, so don't know if it works. I do plan to put it all around, except one small place where the fly wheel would hit it.
