Has anyone identified what model/brand of halyards Catalina used on the C310? I know it's 3/8ths, white with blue tracers. I'm thinking of replacing with Samson XLS Extra, and am trying to determine if there will be noticebly less stretch with new line.

Maybe this one

I think I may have found it. Novabraid XLE double braided polyester. They claim it's their top of the line, low stretch rope. Their chart seems to indicate over 3% stretch at 15% of breaking strength, which is not impressive. New England ropes claims only 2.4 % stretch for their all-purpose Sta-Set polyester. If I am correct, then the Samson XLS Extra has less than 1/3 the stretch, .80% at 15% of breaking strength. This stuff is pretty cost effective compared to the real hi-tech line, but it still ain't cheap. But I think it might be worth the money to hold my luff tight in the strong puffs.

It's probably Yale UULS

The halyards on the C-320 (2002) and the C-30 (87) were both Yale UULS. It is white with a blue tracer, and a VERY LOOSE cover weave. My hallyards get "hernias" where the core pokes through the cover. Many people on the C-320 list are changing to Vizzon line (not sure how to spell it or who makes it). Thank You!

You are absolutely correct. I realized last night, while sailing, that I had it wrong, but was still in the dark as to what it really was. It's funny, the chart at the following link shows the UULS, and Vission have the same amount stretch. I'm not sure what to make of that, but if true, then the UULS is not as bad as I thought it was, at <1% stretch.

Chart says UULS OK, Hernias in line say NO

I looked at the link you posted on teh streatch of both Vizzon and Yale UULS. They seem to have the same characteristics. However, the Vizzon has a tighter weave for the cover, and is probably less likely to develop those nasty hernias that I'm continually getting with the UULS. Can't justify the change right now, but when I replace my halyards, I won't be using the Yale UULS (in spite of the good dpecs). Steve Alchemist C-320

I agree

I'm not thrilled with our halyards either. I wanted to replace with the Samson XLS Extra, But I have to wait now. I bumped into another boat prior to the start of the race last Tuesday, and had to buy them a couple of new stanchion bases. Plus I want to get some new crab traps for our cruise in a few weeks. Then I have to save up some more money.
